Many footprints in KiCad’s library have associated 3D models; these models are provided in both VRML and STEP formats. Only one of the two models needs to be listed in the footprint (typically the VRML filename is given). KiCad can automatically substitute the STEP version when exporting a 3D model of the board for mechanical CAD purposes.
